EXCavation Inspection helps the employer-designated competent person perform complete and accurate OSHA-required inspections of excavations and the surrounding areas. The competent person using this application must be trained to recognize all possible hazards and have authority to take corrective action, including stopping work activities until the hazards are eliminated or effectively controlled.
These required inspections must be performed before workers enter the excavation and as needed during work operations. You must also complete an inspection after each hazard-increasing occurrence (i.e., after a rainstorm, pile driving, blasting, etc.).
To use EXCavation Inspection:
1. Enter your information (name, phone, email) on the Competent Person Info screen and start your inspection..
2. Enter information on your excavation. EXCavation Inspection automatically enters the GPS coordinates (you can add details) and displays the current forecast for your location. You specify the soil types, maximum depth, spoil pile height, protective systems in use, and whether you have (or may have) surface encumbrances, water, or atmospheric hazards.
3. Complete each inspection item. The program will present you with a series of safety requirements which you rate as pass, fail or N/A. If you are unsure what you should be looking for, touch the item to bring up a Help screen. You can take pictures from within the application to record conditions as needed.
4. Archive or email the completed inspection and photos.
EXCavation Inspection does not replace competent person training but it does provide a comprehensive and easy-to-use tool that can help ensure that your excavation complies with OSHA requirements. This program reflects Federal OSHA requirements as specified in 29 CFR 1926.650 - 652. It also includes a list of known state-specific variations.
